SALARY: $52,000-55,000

 

The City of Chester is looking to hire a qualified police Investigator to join our police department. The investigator will investigate alleged criminal activities and build solid cases against suspects linked to a range of crimes, including but not limited to, homicide, fraud, and organized crime. Investigator responsibilities will include collecting and analyzing evidence, interviewing witnesses, and suspects, conducting surveillance, and making arrests. The investigator should be able to work independently and as part of a diverse team of professionals.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Conduct detailed investigations of complex criminal activities and other violations of local, federal, or state law.
  2. Collect, analyze, and preserve evidence.
  3. Direct crime scene investigators and other law enforcement personnel at crime scenes.
  4. Employ deductive reasoning and analysis to make informed decisions and conclusions that lead to prosecution.
  5. Write detailed case reports, and file and maintain records.
  6. Coordinate search and arrest warrants, and arrest suspects as needed.
  7. Testify in court regarding case evidence and findings in order to secure a conviction.
  8. Man, and operate firearms and electronic surveillance equipment.
  9. Undergo continuous training and development as required.
  10. Maintain strict confidentiality.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

1. Thorough knowledge of police methods, practices, procedures and of investigative techniques and techniques of identification.

2. Thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Police Department.

3. General knowledge of pertinent Federal and State laws and municipal ordinances.

4. Thorough knowledge of geography of the City and the location of important buildings.

5. Ability to analyze evidence.

6. Ability to question and interview skillfully.

7. Ability to organize and prepare clear and concise reports.

8. Skill in the use of firearms and motor vehicles.

9. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, other law enforcement officials and the general public.

Police Investigator Skills and Qualifications

Good communication and interview skills. Good interview skills are vital to any investigation. A police investigator must ask clear questions to find out as much detail from the interview as possible and recognize any gaps in a story. The police investigator must also be a good listener and can read body language.

Ability to use various forms of equipment or technology. Police investigators often use technology to help in their investigations. The equipment varies according to the type of investigation.

Thorough knowledge of the law. A police investigator needs to know the laws surrounding a case. He or she must also know what they are legally allowed to do during the research, otherwise, the evidence may be thrown out of court.

Honesty and good ethics. A police investigator must be ethical, honest and law abiding. If a police investigator is caught lying or using unethical methods, he or she will lose credibility, perhaps lose their job or even be convicted of a crime themselves.

Critical thinking, deductive reasoning, social perceptiveness, and problem-solving skills. Piecing things together requires good problem-solving skills, especially to find out the truth about what really happened. Critical thinking allows the police investigator to look past the obvious solutions and to objectively analyze evidence.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  1. Attain and remain current in all certifications described for eligibility for Police Officer and satisfactory completion of the required probationary period.
  2. Three (3) years as a certified police officer, equivalent service time with another law enforcement agency in a similar job description may be utilized to meet or law enforcement agency in a similar job description may be utilized to meet or exceed the three (3) years requirement.
  3. No written disciplinary actions, disciplinary suspension and/or involuntary demotions within the past twelve months that would exclude the candidate.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Possession and continued maintenance of a valid South Carolina Driver’s License, Class D and a satisfactory driving record is required.
  2. Must meet and maintain all Department and State training and education requirements for position.
  3. Must attend specialized schools or training related to the job requirements of a Police Investigator as soon as practical prior to or after becoming an Investigator.
  4. Willingness and ability to work flexible hours, any shift, holidays, weekends and be available on call is required.
